So yesterday was an interesting day.
Starting last Friday we had been hearing about Typhoon Bolaven. This typhoon was supposed to be one of the biggest typhoons to hit South Korea in the last decade. Many were tracking the typhoon as it hit Okinawa, Japan and then made its way to South Korea. Our school was one of over 15,000 schools that were shut down on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. Many people taped the windows at their homes and businesses as a way of preventing the glass from shattering. So Karmen and I were quite excited to experience our first ever typhoon. I had envisioned myself standing out in the fierce wind and pelting rain, with our tiny umbrella as Karmen took a video from under cover.
We woke up Tuesday morning with great anticipation. The schools were cancelled for the students but the teachers were required to come in for a prep day. Throughout the morning, we went outside to see what the weather was doing. There were some strong winds, fast moving clouds and a little sporadic rain. We were being told that the typhoon was scheduled to hit in full force around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. So we waited and waited (and did some prep work for our upcoming classes of course). We heard of reports of damage to street lights, glass breaking and lots of debris being tossed about. However, our area proved to be sheltered from the storm. The wind definitely howled, but there was very little rain and nothing exciting to write home about. So all in all, our first typhoon was quite a let down. Maybe we are little twisted for feeling this way. We are thankful that we are safe and that this natural disaster did not prove to be overly devastating for the country (last we heard the death toll was at 10, any death count is tragic). Here are a few pictures to remember this day....
