A Rainy Day in Korea

Generally speaking, South Korea experiences very dry falls/winters. Except, of course, on Saturdays. You know, that one day of the week that you are completely free to do whatever you like.

We had plans to head out of the Seoul area to do some sightseeing, but woke up to rain. We quickly turned to Plan B. And this is what happened.

We toured the Seodaemun Prison History Hall. Well done and informative about the Japanese occupation of Korea. Interesting fact: the prison was functional until the eighties, when they moved it. Down the street from our apartment. No jokes. I live about three blocks from Seoul Detention Center. Back to Seodaemun, the grounds are actually quite beautiful, most of the prison having been torn down and made into a park.

Next we used all of our street sense to find Seorae Global Village. According to a tourist guide book, Seorae Village is "Little France". So naturally, we were expecting something French: flags, cafes, restaurants, people. While we did see a French immersion school and some street signs written in French and Korean, it was a little disappointing. We ended up eating pastries at Paris Croissant, which in spite of its name, is as Korean as kimchi.

Finally, we lost ourselves in Gangnam Underground Shopping Center. Found myself a sweet Konglish shirt. Unfortunately, one size fits all in Korea does not fit this Canadian. #longarms. Oh well.
